A number of publications,
among which several in Nature/Science, came out in the last three
years focusing on remote sensing and in situ measurements of isotopic
composition of water vapour in the atmosphere and their scientific
This has been accompanied by a revival of modelling water isotops in particular within the famework of convection. In the same time, new commercial ground based IR spectrometric techniques (eg Picarro, Los Gatos, ..) became recently available to conduct high-frequency measurements of water vapour for a relatively moderate price. All these developments will provide us a complete new set of data and tools to evaluate our models and concepts of the functioning of the global water cycle.
With this in mind we would like to organize a workshop on both the technical and modelling aspects of recent developments and on the scientific results already obtained or expected.
The workshop will be held in
Paris at the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6 ) in the
center of the city over three and days on April 27-30, 2010, just
before the 2010 Assembly in Vienna.
The workshop will start on Tuesday 27 April at 13:30 and will end on Friday 30 April at 18:00
The workshop will cover both the technical and modelling aspects of recent developments and the scientific results already obtained or expected. A significant space will be devoted to instrumental issues and the sessions of presentations will be completed by discussion panels.

Impact of measuring water vapour isotopologues on the understanding of the upper troposphere / lower stratosphere, convection and precipitations the global cycle of water in the atmosphere and climate.
Limitations and future developments of satellite based sensing techniques. How to reduce uncertainties? Ratio 18O/17O in water vapour? Calibration using ground based data?
Ground based IR spectroscopy: Calibration of water vapour measurements? Ongoing activities and experiences with the existing different facilities. Towards a near-online water isotopologue meteorology. Is there a need/possibility to coordinate a network of water isotopologue IR spectrometers over certain regions?
Models: Where are the largest uncertainties in the hydrological cycle at ground levels and within the atmosphere, in particular in the Tropical Tropopause Layer and how can they be constraint by the water isotopes? What can we learn on convection from isotopic measurements? How can we combine isotopic measurements with short and live-species to understand transport properties? How to mimic the various remote sensing techniques in the models? What do we expect from the water isotopes in the future: Sensitivity to the ongoing climate change?
